Operation Slowdown is a statewide traffic safety campaign led by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in partnership with state and local law enforcement agencies. Running July 18–August 2, the initiative combines public awareness with increased speed enforcement to reduce crashes caused by excessive speed. During the campaign, motorists can expect to see additional officers on Texas roadways enforcing posted speed limits while encouraging drivers to slow down and drive for current traffic, weather, and road conditions.
Â
The campaign comes as speeding continues to be the leading contributing factor in fatal crashes across Texas. In 2025, speeding contributed to more than 150,000 crashes, resulting in 1,247 fatalities and 5,652 serious injuries. TxDOT reminds drivers that arriving a few minutes earlier is never worth the risk, and encourages motorists to leave extra following distance, obey changing speed limits—especially in work and school zones—and always buckle up.Â
